Roy’s stepfather’s alcohol addiction had started interfering with his job. Eventually, not only he was fired but was unable to find work elsewhere too. This forced Roy’s mom to look for work as well, and she would work 12 hours a day just to be able to afford clothes for her children.

Faced with this grim reality, Roy learned to be as independent as he could. From a very early age, he would be in charge of making himself food, going to school, and getting back.
