5 Tips On How to Successfully Change Your Career in 2021
Let’s face it, 2020 has been hard on everyone, with millions stuck to deal with unforeseen financial troubles. Global industries are now working with limited staff- even those which usually require a bigger work-force. According to research, almost 20% of people changed their careers to meet their financial needs in the midst of 2020.
According to career coaches, Ariel Lopez and Latesha Byrd, if you’ve found yourself in a rut, read on ahead to discover 5 tips on how to change your career successfully.
1. Have a Clear Vision
Most of the time, we might understand that we need a change but, are unable to pinpoint what we actually want. The feeling is all too familiar to most of us. The best way to approach this is to make a list of do’s and don’ts- what kind of environment you want to work in, what kind of team, and what your strong points and weaknesses. This will guide you in the right direction for your new career.
2. Rebrand Yourself
Now that you know and are aware of the career path you want to follow, your next step should be updating your resume. It’s time to pick up a pen and a paper to research what your desired job description should look like.
Lookup jobs and their descriptions, and try to make changes to your resume so that your description would mirror what your target company would want to hire. You can log into LinkedIn and follow people who are already working in that field, read through their profile, and get an idea of how you should update yours.
3. See If You Need Any Special Training or Education
Before making a career switch, you need to evaluate whether you need some sort of training or education to help you make your breakthrough. If you think that this new career path requires more skills or training, go ahead and weigh out the pros and cons. This will definitely take time, energy, and even financial resources.
However, there are many sites that are offering free online courses that may help boost your resume. One of them even includes Google, which is offering 100,000 scholarships online.
4. Highlight Your Transferrable Skills
When speaking to an interviewer, you must be able to communicate and explain your reason for switching careers and how the work experience you’ve gained can also benefit you in the new career choice. Skills like communication, conflict resolution, and creativity are deemed important and should be displayed on your resume and during the interview.
5. Network Yourself to the Top
Networking is definitely hard in this day and age, but the internet is your tried and trusted friend here. LinkedIn is a website that allows you to connect with people that will possibly help you, not only with work but also in boosting your confidence. Head over to your LinkedIn and look for potential professionals that can help you or people who have recently made a career switch.
Bottom Line
Some life changes can be overwhelming to the point that they might render you incapable of action. However, you need to be the kind of person who doesn’t panic in the face of change. Take this challenge head-on, and reap the benefits once you’ve established yourself in the field.
