Common Mistakes that are Sabotaging Your Career Search
You’ve finally graduated and you’ve reaped all the hard work, the efforts, the sacrifices you did just to study hard and diligently to get a passing grade. If you’ve completed the tedious process of passing every subject in each semester, now you can finally sigh in relief because all of your efforts have paid off. The college degree also means no further need to put up with your savage instructors who bombarded you with lots of assignments, projects, and surprise quizzes anymore. You finally earned a diploma and a good college record that will serve as a ticket to land a good job.
Except, that didn’t happen! What we realize is that graduating is just the beginning of a more crucial journey. The next step and our milestone is job and career hunting. We need to find a good, stable job that doesn’t only provide our living and support but, more than ever, we need a job or career that can satisfy us and make our life happy. However, you’ll realize that a career search is never easy! You have millions of other job seekers competing for a limited position.
How can you gain a competitive edge? Stop committing these job-hunting mistakes that are sabotaging your career search now!
You Don’t Have a Clear Career Focus
As a fresh graduate, we understand that your main focus right now is to land a job. You want to have a job in order to earn an income that can help support your living. Oftentimes we seek any job as long as it pays well. While income is a major factor in our decision making, we fail to realize that this is just our short-term goal. Why? It’s because we’re not thinking about our career in the long-term. Where can you see yourself five years from now? We feel like our world stopped and we’re speechless because we don’t know how to answer that question during interviews.
Why? It’s because you didn’t really plan your career goals. You have no career focus. You don’t have an exact idea of who you’re going to be in the future. So, we recommend that you formulate or plan your career focus as early as now. Do you want to be a renowned surgeon someday? Then apply a job to a hospital or medically related firms. Do you want to become a successful businessman? Then you may get that foundation in a business firm. When you have a focus, you’re able to narrow down your job search and increase your probability to get hired.
You Take Jobs Even If It’s Not Your Field of Expertise
One of the main reasons why there are a high turnover and number of employees resigning or quitting their jobs to seek another, better one is because of job mismatch. Most people only take into consideration the salary they’ll get, without realizing the magnitude of the job that needs to get done. Most of the time, they find themselves exhausted and frustrated because they can’t seem to meet the standards or expectations of the said job. Their skills and abilities don’t match the job descriptions. Or if not, they cannot seem to meet or face the stress, pressure, and demand for the job they currently have. In order to avoid this, assess yourself about your strength and weakness, as well as your skills and only apply for jobs that are in a line of your skills. If you’re confident in what you do, chances are, you’ll be able to do your job well.
Only Preparing to Answer General Questions During an Interview
While preparing to answer these general questions are also crucial to pass the interview, the thing is, not all interviews are patterned by the general questions we hear or read in articles. Most of the times, the questions asked during an interview will be all about your job and your expertise. Tell you what, it’s incredibly easy to answer a job interview, you don’t even need to prepare yourself anymore. How? It’s only easy if you do understand your job. If you know the ins and out of your job, the technicalities, etc, then you’re assured that you can answer any questions with ease. It feels like you’re just talking with the interviewer about your work rather than having a formal job interview. It comes out naturally.
